I am getting a new roof. They started today. Normally, I get up, get dressed and open the blinds on the second floor. This morning I started to do just that and suddenly thought...there are going to be men working on the roof today. Do I REALLY want them to see what s in the house? So, I closed the blinds on all the 2ND floor windows and tipped the blinds on the first floor so they could only see toward the floor.
Be careful when you are having any work done at your home, inside or out.
Better safe than sorry.

Spring Safety Tips
With Spring in the air and warmer days ahead keep these tips in mind with your doors and windows open
1. If you leave your front or side door open be sure you have the screen door locked even if your at home.
2. Do you keep your keys by the door so you can quickly grab them on your way out.
Well a burglar can also quickly grab them as well and not only gain access to your
home but also your garage and vehicles.
3. Ladies don't leave your purse on a table or counter top that can be seen from the outside of the home. Many thieve can quickly grab a purse just by opening a screen and leave quietly without you even noticing.
4. Make sure items such as picnic tables or outdoor furniture are not placed directly under or near your windows. Burglars have no problem standing on one to get to that window you thought was high enough not to be reached.

A hero in the neighborhood
If you saw the paper today you saw we have a bit of hero in the area. A young man was walking from the Princeton area toward E. Hts., on Sherman. He happened to see two guys going through cars. He followed them a ways and then yelled at them..the one took off. The other guy hung around and told the young man he lived there. The young man said he was sure the guy wouldn t mind him going up to the door with him to get confirmation. The guy ( who actually lived on Broad Street) took off running. The young man gave chase, knocked him down and called the police. The " car snoop" was arrested. Police checked with the owners of the cars and they said nothing was taken. We discourage anyone from getting involved with a would be "thug" but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. Hats off to the young man. I m going to try to get a hold of him and thank him. Clearly, these cars were not owned by Block Watch members as you all know to lock your cars, RIGHT???
Break in alert.
Just received this today from a BW member.

In Memory of James Kerstetter
Two years ago, today, Elyria lost a great Officer. Officer James Kerstetter gave his life for the community he served. Please, say a prayer or send a good thought to his widow and their three daughters.
The life of a police officer is never an easy one. James Kerstetter was an amazing officer and an amazing person. His loss not only effected our city but the cities around us. Show respect to the men and women who lay their lives on the line for you every single day.
R.I.P. Jimmy.

Car break ins at funeral homes
If you saw the paper this morning you saw the article about this. This happened in N. Ridgeville. Sadly, it happens all over. There were not unlocked cars. They actually smashed the windows out of the cars.
LADIES if you take a purse with you then take it WITH YOU..where ever you go. Purses were stolen out of these cars. If you don t feel you need to take it into the funeral home, then leave it home.
GENTLEMEN do not leave wallets in the cars.
NO ONE should leave anything of value in their cars..its just an easy target. Also, watch what you leave in the ashtrays. Many don t smoke anymore and use the ashtray to hold money, jewelry or keys. Just because its closed doesn t mean they won t enter your car and check.
CEMETARY: This is another hot spot for theft. People get out of their cars to go to the grave. Many leave belongs in the seats and many do not lock the doors. While you are at the gravesite, most of the time with your back to your car, it s an easy target.
The best defense is to lock the car. There s is nothing you can do if they opt to smash your window, but most just look for an unlocked door.
